Safeguards while transplanting?

I want to transplant a big plant, this is like a small tree. I have never transplanted anything that big before. This has been where it is for several years and is perfectly healthy. I don't want to kill it, though I realize that some shock may be unavoidable. What safeguards can I take to minimize the damage?
